KIRRIE GOES GHANA | to help disabled children

In total Kirsten is working with 100 disabled children from 8 villages in the West Manprusi district. This are children with hearing and sight problems, underfeeding and blood anaemia, children with epilepsy and at last children with fysical and/or mental handicap.

Deaf children
After Kirsten collected the information needed, all children are registered at a school for deaf children. She had a meeting with the parents of the children to point out the interest of education for their deaf child. The child has to learn to function independent in the society. The parents have to find a way to finance it theirselves, so they won't be independent of help. Of course Kirsten did help them, for example by financing the schooluniform and/or transport. In the meantime six children started 9 November 2007 at the 'Savelugu Deaf School'.

Children with epilepsy
30 Children have epilepsy. In almost all cases caused by convulsion. Those children have attacks each month, sometimes each week. The more the attacks, the bigger the change to brain damage. Transport and money for the hospital and medicine is often a problem. When a child would take medicine each day for a year or two, the child has a bigger change to grow over the attacks. Kirsten is trying to get medicine to the smaller villages. Unfortunately it didn't work out yet, but she is still talking to the hospitals to make it possible.

Children fysically disabled
Kirsten has 6 children fysical disabled, mainly disfigured legs with the consequence they are not able to walk well. As they will grow older it will cause more fysical problems. The files of the children are delivered at the hospital. The (financial) appeal is done at the Liliane Fonds and in the meantime approved. Two children are already operated, at home and doing well. Also the boy burned at his private parts is operated by a plastic surgeon. Two other children are send home, one has a leg wound which has to heal, the other one has to get stronger before they can operate. As soon as they are well we can schedule them for the operation. Hopefully we can help more children, by operations, splints, (rehabilitation)therapy.

Children mentally disabled
At the moment Kirsten has 15 children mentally disabled.
