Cheikh Andji born and raised in Dakar, Senegal and nowadays living in Amsterdam with his wife. Cheikh is from a family greater part 'griot', a term used for someone who tells history and current matters on a musical way. At a young age he was given knowledge of djembé, soon he was playing at weekly activities and his talent was noticed!
In the time spend with the ballet 'Forêt Sacrée', accompanied by the great dancer and choreographer Joe Bouzanzoe, Cheikh learned the needed discipline and professionality to improve his art. In 1996 the group cooperate with the choreographer Abdou Thiam. Together they became the group 'Les Danses Africaines Du Senegal' with the great ballet 'Gorée, Mon Historie'. Day in, day out they rehearsed in the 'Centre Culturel Blaise Senghore' in Dakar. January 1997 the group went for the first time to Western Europa for a promotion tour of two weeks. After working really hard for another eight months the magnificent ballet returned for a tour of three months. They performed in the big theatres from Holland, Belgium and Germany. Whip uped music, wonderful coloured costumes and acrobatic dances made a magical play which brought the audience in a complete other world.
After this succesfull tour the manager of the group disappeared with the money. Twelve artists from this group stayed, out of necessity, in Holland. A plane ticket back to Senegal didn't belong to the opportunities no more. This promising group formed, with the artists from Gambia and Guinee, the ballet 'Bantaba'. The ballet consist of 25 professional artists known by their perfect choreography and their fantastic talent!
Cheikh wasn't just part of the group in Holland. The group Dom'U Africa had his base in Lille (France). This percussion group is found in 1998 by Samba and Mansoure Diop and is mainly formed by the brothers Diop-Andji. This group performed a lot in France, among wich for the France government.
In 2000 Cheikh played for Dialila Waraba, a group formed by artists coming from different West-African countries. Their repetoire was all-round. Al last Cheikh played with Jaay Naffi, a ballet situated in Amsterdam.
Nowadays Cheikh is working independant under the name DJEMBEFOLA and is still part of the group Diop Percu, once again mainly formed by the brothers Diop-Andji. All artists with great talent!
